How many Steam wishlists do you need to launch?

Short answerThere's no official minimum. Public benchmarks put first-week sales at a median of about 15% of wishlists (closer to 10% above $10), and Steam's personal calendar tiers at about 5,000 wishlists for Bronze and 8,000 for Silver (June 2026).
There is no official minimum: Steam shows games with any number of wishlists. But wishlists decide how many players hear about your launch, and how far Steam's own recommendations carry it. Here is what the public benchmarks say.
01Wishlists to sales in the first week
Public surveys put first-week sales at a median of about 15% of your wishlists, closer to 10% for games above $10. The spread is wide: genre, price, reviews and launch timing all move it.
So 10,000 wishlists suggest roughly 1,000 to 1,500 first-week sales. Don't know a game's wishlists? Estimate them from its followers: followers to wishlists. The first week is only a start: discounts of 20% or more email your wishlisters again, and seasonal sales, themed fests and updates keep selling.
02The wishlist tiers of Steam's personal calendar
Since Valve refreshed its home page in June 2026, upcoming games are recommended through each player's personal calendar, about 8 weeks ahead of their release date. The old "7,000 wishlists for Popular Upcoming" rule of thumb is out of date. First benchmarks from June 2026 (very recent data):
- 2,000Below: events barely lift a game
- 5,000Personal calendar, Bronze
- 8,000Personal calendar, Silver
- 50,000Personal calendar, Gold
- 90,000Personal calendar, Diamond
- Bronze: about 5,000 to 32,000 wishlists at launch (top 250).
- Silver: about 8,000 to 60,000 (top 100).
- Gold: about 50,000 to 120,000 (top 50).
- Diamond: about 90,000 to 360,000 (top 10).
On two games measured, players clicked 31% to 34% of the time from the personal calendar, against 0.8% to 1.6% from the old Popular Upcoming list. A game enters the calendar once its release date is set: announce it about 8 weeks before launch.
03What to aim for
- Around 5,000 wishlists for the Bronze tier, 8,000 for Silver, as a first target.
- Wishlists don't expire: ones collected years before launch convert at about the same rate as recent ones.
- Watch your wishlists, not your visits: before launch, wishlists are the only number that predicts anything; visits and page conversion rates are too noisy.
Far from the target? Festivals and creators come before ads. If wishlists stay low despite them, practitioners advise launching with a smaller scope rather than spending tens of thousands on ads. You only launch once, Early Access included.
04Track your pace against your launch date

05Why some games convert better
- Price: public benchmarks show games above $10 convert a smaller share of wishlists in the first week (how to price your indie game).
- The launch discount: at 20% or more over 8 hours, it sends a second email to wishlisters during the launch window.
- Recent momentum: a demo, a Next Fest or a creator video shortly before launch brings wishlisters who are still interested.
- Reviews in the first days: wishlisters who hesitate read them before buying (how to get Steam reviews).
06Below your target?
If your wishlists are far below the tier you aimed for a few months before launch, you have three levers: add a festival or two, release or update your demo, or move your date to the next window after a Next Fest. Practitioners advise against spending tens of thousands on ads to fill the gap. The plan: how to get more Steam wishlists.
