Short answerPost many short clips that open on your strongest moment and create a feeling within seconds, then learn from each one. A view is worth little on its own: about 7 wishlists per 1,000 views in a 2026 sample, so measure every post with a tracked Steam link.
Nobody can promise a viral post. What you can do is make many good attempts, learn fast from each one, and be ready to turn a spike of views into wishlists. Here is what the public data says about clips that spread, and what a view is actually worth.
01What a viral clip looks like
- The strongest moment first. A clip lives or dies in its first three or four seconds: open on the core visual idea or the gameplay, never on a logo, a cinematic or live action.
- About one minute, cut from your trailer, not the whole trailer, with a short text hook: the genre, what the player does, a few unique features, and a question such as "Would you play this?".
- A feeling, fast: the hooks that spread best create fear, humor, nostalgia or curiosity within seconds. In one 2026 sample, horror games and cute animal games drew the biggest numbers.
- The Steam link as a reply, not in the main post: practitioners suspect links reduce reach, even if nobody knows for sure. Hashtags no longer matter much.
02What a view is worth in wishlists
In a 2026 sample of tweets from eight indie games, the median was about 7 wishlists per 1,000 views, from 2.5 to 21 depending on the game. Views tracked wishlists closely, likes less so. The sample is small and self-reported: use it as an order of magnitude.
So a post at 100,000 views is worth a few hundred wishlists, and a million views a few thousand. That's why social media is the weakest wishlist source for most games, except visually striking ones that go viral again and again. You only find out which kind yours is by posting.
03Where to post
- X: one or two clips a day, and reply to comments. A Buffer study of 18.8 million posts found a median reach about 10 times higher with X Premium than with a free account: worth it only if you post there regularly.
- TikTok, YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels: short vertical videos. TikTok says follower count isn't a direct factor in its recommendations, so a new account dedicated to your game has its chance. Watch retention: if viewers leave after two seconds, fix the opening.
- Reddit: native videos under 60 seconds in your genre's communities, after building a real history there. See how to market an indie game on Reddit.
04When a post takes off
- Reply fast and keep the Steam link visible in the replies.
- Use it as proof: big outlets such as IGN mostly pick up indie trailers after a viral signal. Pitch them your trailer, as an exclusive if you can.
- Post the next clip while people are still looking: a single spike fades within days.
- Measure it: put a Steam UTM link in each post, so Steamworks shows the wishlists each one brought.
Then do it again. A viral post doesn't replace the steady sources of wishlists: festivals, YouTubers and streamers, and a Steam page that converts. More in how to get more Steam wishlists.

How to make your indie game go viral: quick answers
How many wishlists does a viral post bring?
In a 2026 sample of indie game tweets, the median was about 7 wishlists per 1,000 views, from 2.5 to 21 depending on the game. A post at 100,000 views is worth a few hundred wishlists.
Should I put the Steam link in my post?
Practitioners recommend posting it as a reply rather than in the main post, because links may reduce reach. Use a Steam UTM link to measure what each post brings.
Can a new TikTok account go viral?
Yes. TikTok says follower count isn't a direct factor in its recommendations, so a video from a new account can spread if people watch it.
What kind of game clips go viral?
Clips that create a feeling within seconds: fear, humor, nostalgia or curiosity. Open on the strongest moment, keep it around a minute, and skip logos and cinematics at the start.
