Short answerValve says the strongest signal is whether people buy and play your game; your tags and languages decide who sees it, and every surface is personalized. Wishlists matter mostly for Popular Upcoming and launch emails, traffic itself isn't a factor, and visibility can't be bought.
There's a lot of folklore about the Steam algorithm. Valve actually documents how visibility works, including what doesn't matter. Here is what its documentation says, and what you can act on.
01What Steam's visibility rewards
Valve sums it up as one question: are people buying and playing your game? That's the strongest signal behind most store surfaces. Two more things you control decide who sees your game:
- ImpressionsTags, festivals, creators, posts
- VisitsCapsule, first seconds of the trailer
- WishlistsTrailer, screenshots, description
- SalesLaunch email, discount, price, reviews
- Tags: Steam uses them to categorize your game and pick who to show it to. Use the tags popular, similar games use and that truly apply (Steam page guide).
- Languages: Steam is more likely to show your game to players who speak a language it supports.
Everything is personalized: Valve says placement depends on each player's preferences, play history, location, language, friends' activity and followed curators.
02The store surfaces, and how you get there
- New Releases queue: baseline visibility at launch, favoring the titles with the fewest views since release.
- All New Releases: linked from the Steam home page at launch.
- New & Trending: on the home and genre pages if your game does well; Valve warns you can be bumped off quickly in busy weeks.
- Top Sellers: once your game reaches a sales rank, on the home page and relevant genre and tag pages.
- Main capsule and home recommendations: personalized, for games doing very well.
- Discovery Queue, Specials, friends' activity and Curator recommendations.
- Popular Upcoming: the one place Valve names as an exception, where wishlists matter before release.
03What doesn't matter (according to Valve)
- Wishlists, mostly: apart from Popular Upcoming, they aren't what ranks you. They matter because each wishlister gets an email at launch and buys.
- Store page traffic: "not a factor", though extra visits can lead to sales that help.
- Conversion rate.
- Review score, as long as it's 40% or more. Below that, a game is less likely to be featured.
- Paid promotion: asked whether you can pay for visibility, Valve answers "Nope".
04What you can act on
- Before launch: collect wishlists, since they turn into the buyers who trigger everything else (how to get more wishlists).
- Your trailer's first seconds: since June 2026, Steam plays the start of your trailer when someone hovers your capsule on the home page.
- Your release date: Steam's personal calendar recommends upcoming games about 8 weeks ahead once their date is set.
- After launch: Update Visibility Rounds highlight major updates to owners and wishlisters once your launch visibility ends (two weeks after launch for Early Access).
- Festivals and discounts: Next Fest, themed fests and the seasonal sales are surfaces of their own (Steam festivals).

How the Steam algorithm works: quick answers
How does the Steam algorithm work?
Valve says the strongest signal is whether people are buying and playing your game. Tags and supported languages decide who sees it, and every surface is personalized for each player.
Do wishlists affect Steam's algorithm?
Mostly not, according to Valve, except for Popular Upcoming. Wishlists matter because every wishlister gets an email at launch.
Does review score affect Steam visibility?
Not while your reviews are Mixed or above (40% or more). Below 40%, a game is less likely to be featured.
Can I pay Steam for visibility?
No. Asked whether developers can pay for visibility, Valve answers "Nope".
Does store page traffic help on Steam?
Valve says traffic itself isn't a factor, though extra visits can lead to sales that help.
