How to get reviews for your Steam demo

Short answerA Steam demo can have user reviews only if it has its own store page; an attached demo has none. You may ask for honest reviews outside the demo, never from inside it or for a reward, and Steam shows a score after about 10 reviews.
Reviews on a demo page reassure players before they even download it, and they tell you what to fix before launch. But a demo only gets reviews in one configuration, and Valve's rules limit how you can ask for them. Here is how it works.
01Can a Steam demo have reviews?
Only if it has its own store page. By default a demo is attached to your game's page, as a button, and has no reviews. When you enable a separate store page, Valve states that players of the demo can leave user reviews. That page also needs a written description, supported features and languages, a trailer and at least five screenshots specific to the demo.
Valve doesn't say that demo reviews count toward your game's review score, and the demo is a separate app on Steam. Treat them as the demo's own score.
02Should you turn reviews on?
- For: social proof on the demo page, and honest feedback while you can still change the game.
- Against: negative reviews are public too, and a separate page needs its own trailer and screenshots.
- Rule of thumb: turn them on when outside players have finished your demo without major problems. A demo that still crashes should stay attached.
You can change your mind later: if you disable the separate page, the demo is only reachable from your game's page and old demo links redirect there.
03What Valve allows, and what it forbids
- No rewards for reviews: no games, DLC, money or other rewards in exchange for a review. Sending copies to press and creators is the stated exception.
- No asking from inside the app: Valve forbids asking customers to review your product from within your application, so no review pop-up in the demo.
- No manipulation of the review system in any form.
- You can reply: an official developer response appears below a review. Valve advises against replying to every review or arguing with opinions.
Outside the game, a neutral invitation is the safe line: in your Discord, newsletter or a Steam announcement, ask players for an honest review, never a positive one, and never in exchange for anything.
04How many reviews before a score shows?
Steam shows "Need more user reviews to generate a score" until a product has about 10 reviews. Valve doesn't publish its labels; community-compiled thresholds put Positive at 80% or more with fewer than 50 reviews, Very Positive at 80% or more with 50 or more, and Overwhelmingly Positive at 95% or more with 500 or more. Steam shows two scores: the last 30 days and all time.
05How to get more honest demo reviews
- Get more players: reviews follow players, so start with how to get people to play your demo.
- Make the ending memorable: players review what they finished and enjoyed (how to make a good game demo).
- Ask your community, outside the game and without rewards.
- Fix what reviews point out, then say so in a Steam announcement: it shows players you listen, and earns updated reviews.
