Key findingAmong 5,128 Steam Next Fest October 2026 demos from games with fewer than 500 Steam followers, the median demo peaked at 2 concurrent players and 9% reached 10 or more. Co-op, idle, incremental, cozy and organizing niches had the largest shares at 10+; platformers, shooters and shoot 'em ups the smallest, at every follower size.

Most games at Next Fest are small: thousands of them arrive with fewer than 500 followers. Which of them got played? During the first four days of Next Fest October 2026, we read the concurrent players of every public demo from those games, every three hours, and compared them by Steam tag.

Sample: 5,128 public demos of games on the official Steam Next Fest October 2026 list with fewer than 500 Steam followers.

01The overall picture

  • The median demo peaked at 2 concurrent players; the mean was 7.3.
  • 9% reached 10 players or more at once, 2% reached 50 or more, and 55 demos reached 100 or more.
  • The 5 most played demos made 18% of the sum of all peaks.

Why rank by the share at 10+ players rather than by the mean? Because one hit carries a niche's mean: survival horror had a mean of 34 and a median of 1, with a single demo making almost all of it. The median and the share at 10+ tell you what happens to a typical game.

In the middle: bullet heaven (155 demos, 11.0% at 10+), horror (348, 9.2%), roguelite (565, 8.8%), strategy (974, 7.7%) and action roguelike (370, 5.7%).

04The same order at every size

Bigger games get more players, so we split the demos by Steam followers before the fest. Share of demos at 10+ players:

Idler9%43%86%
Incremental8%43%86%
Platformer0%10%17%

Visual Novel0%8%36%

Co-op, idle and incremental games stay above the whole fest in every band; platformers, shooters and visual novels stay below. Puzzle games catch up at 200 to 499 followers (46%): they're not behind everywhere.

05Why co-op and idle games lead (and what that doesn't mean)

  • Co-op counts every friend a player invites: one player who brings three friends shows as four.
  • Idle games and desktop companions stay open in the background: a counted player isn't always playing.
  • Players are not wishlists: a demo can be played a lot and convert little, or the other way around.

So this isn't a reason to switch genre. It tells you what a normal Next Fest looks like for a small game in your niche, so you can judge your own demo against games like yours rather than against the whole fest.

06What it means for your game

  1. Under 500 followers, a peak of 2 players is the median: a quiet demo is not a failure, it's the fest's typical result.
  2. Compare with your niche: 10 players at once puts a platformer far above its niche and an online co-op game below its own.
  3. The follower bands show the real lever: games with 200 to 499 followers reached 10+ players 15 times more often than games under 50. Build followers and wishlists before the fest (how to prepare for Steam Next Fest).
  4. Find the games of your niche and their followers in the top upcoming Steam games by genre.

How we measured

  • Population: games on the official list of Steam Next Fest October 2026 with fewer than 500 Steam followers before the fest opened and a public demo, with at least one reading: 5,128 demos. Demos without a reading are left out, never counted as zero.
  • Players: each demo's peak concurrent players from the opening (October 19, 17:00 UTC) to October 23, 13:00 UTC, read every 3 hours.
  • Niches: a niche is a Steam tag among the game's first 5 tags, very broad tags excluded (Indie, Singleplayer, Casual, Action, Adventure, 2D, 3D and similar). A game counts in each of its tags. Niches with fewer than 40 demos are left out.

Public data only: Steam store pages and public endpoints, read by NextWishlist. No game is named, and no private Steamworks data is used.

Limits

  • Concurrent players are not wishlists.
  • The true peak can fall between two readings: the same bias for every niche.
  • Co-op counts invited friends, and idle games and desktop companions stay open in the background.
  • Small niches (around 50 demos) move a lot with a few games.
  • No game names, and no cause: the data shows which niches got played, not why.
